RYAN GODOWN'S NEW RIDES FOR BIG DIAMOND & NEW EGYPT 2017 (SDS/Bruce Thomas photos)

Ohio's Matt Westfall Joins Weekly SpeedSTR Competition at Kutztown's Action Track USA

Kutztown, PA -  When the green flag waves to begin the fifth season of activity at the JeffreyHogueRealtor.com Action Track USA, a new name - one with a very impressive resume` - will join the USAC All Pro SpeedSTR division, bolstering an already strong Wednesday night field of competitors.
Matt Westfall, from Pleasant Hill, Ohio, will make the weekly trip to Action Track USA on the Kutztown Fairgrounds, to steer a brand new SpeedSTR owned by Milt Aquilini. The car is complete and ready to go, and it will be on display in the Speedway Entertainment/ Action Track USA booth at this weekend's Motorsports Show in Oaks, Pa.
"The Flying Buckeye" jets to the Berks County oval with a set of very solid credentials. Westfall has been racing since the age of six (he turned 40 years-old in December), and he's driven just about everything with four wheels...Karts, Mini-Sprints, both winged and wingless Sprint Cars, Midgets, Modifieds, and Late Models. He was also named the 2002 Rookie of the Year in USAC's Silver Crown division.
Westfall, who lists Jack Hewitt as his role model in racing, was the Rookie of the Year and Champion of the NAMARS Midget Series in 1998. He won the 2010 and 2011 Sprint Car point titles at Waynesfield Raceway, and captured the 2011 RoY award in Eldora's Late Model class. He's also visited victory lane in a USAC Sprint Car feature at Eldora - his favorite race track.
Modified victories have come at the UNOH DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway in Barberville, FL, and in 2015 Westfall was named the DARF Driver of the Year. That was the same season in which he captured the Eldora Late Model Championship and the Buckeye Late Model Dirt Week title.
Westfall also made the Saturday night A-Main at the prestigious Chili Bowl Midget Nationals in five consecutive attempts, but last week's edition of the biggest indoor dirt race in the world wasn't as kind to the Ohio native. He qualified for the feature on his preliminary night (Tuesday), but was collected in Kyle Larson's flip/crash just a few laps from the finish. On Saturday, Westfall was not able to climb out of the D-Main.
Claiming that he "just wants to race as much as possible...in any type of racecar", Westfall is ready for his newest challenge...the USAC All Pro SpeedSTR division. Teaming with Aquilini, who's been helping him with his Sprint Car effort for the past few seasons, seems a natural fit.
Aquilini's involvement in racing goes back decades, to the Reading Fairgrounds and traveling as a member of the late Ronnie Tobias' crew. Milt also owned ARDC Midgets for several years, and Ray Bull drove his cars to numerous race wins and championships with the American Racing Drivers Club. Most recently, Aquilini has served as an official at Action Track USA.
While the car won't make its debut until the May 14 season opener (the Dick Tobias Classic, a 75-lapper for the SpeedSTRs), it will be unveiled to the public at this weekend's PPB Motorsports Racecar & Trade Show at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pa.

NEW CLAY SURFACE READY FOR 2017 SEASON AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY; A FEW MINOR RULE CHANGES IN PLACE AND A NEW DIVISION OF STOCK CAR RACING BEING CONSIDERED FOR 2018

BECHTELSVILLE, PA January 11, 2017 . . . When auto racing gets the green flag for the 2017 season at NASCAR sanctioned Grandview Speedway a fresh clay racing surface will be in place.  “We had a window of opportunity during the second week of November and took advantage of it,” said Assistant Event Organizer Kenny Rogers. “Bashore Trucking was called in to oversee the resurfacing project. With Bashore’s support along with Bill Ryland and a few others we were able to lay down close to 100 truckloads of some of the best looking clay I have seen in a while.”
The Outlaw Enduros and Blast from the Past Vintage racers will get to test the new surface when they open the 2017 season, the 55th consecutive racing season, on Sunday, March 19th.
Then on Saturday, March 25th the annual free to the public practice session will take place with the track open to all types of racing equipment. Action gets started at noon. Many of the T.P.Trailers Modifieds, Late Models and Sportsman stock cars will be using the practice day to ready for the official season opener set for Saturday, April 1, 7 p.m.
There is one correction to be made on the new racing schedule. A 40-lapper is listed for Sportsman on June 3rd and June 17th. Only the June 3rd date is correct for the 40-lapper.
The annual track rules meeting with track officials taking part was held recently. Only a few MINOR rule changes have been implemented for the 2017 season. The Modified division will not be permitted to use W-16 engines and Sportsman will be permitted to race using aluminum wheels.
Open Sportsman will aluminum wheels will have a weight restriction of 2500 pounds while open Sportsman with steel wheels will be allowed 2425 pounds. The 604 Crate Engine Sportsman with steel wheels will be allowed 2350 pounds and the 602 Crate Engine Sportsman will be allowed 2300 pounds.
However there was a discussion regarding a POSSIBLE new affordable division of stock car racing being put in place for the 2018 season. “We have been tossing this idea around for a while,” said Rogers. “We hope to come up with an affordable and fun division in which someone can put a race car together for less than $2,000 to compete and have fun. Hopefully by the middle of the 2017 season we will have a plan in place for the new division.”
The schedule for the 2017 season can be found at www.grandviewspeedway.com and on Grandview Speedway’s Facebook site. Additional information can be had at 610.754.7688.

STEWART FRIESEN TO RACE FULL TIME IN NASCAR CAMPING WORLD TRUCK SERIES

HUNTERSVILLE, NC – Chris Larsen and Stewart Friesen have announced the formation of Halmar Friesen Racing (HFR). HFR will compete in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) running a full schedule for 2017 with Friesen as the driver. Halmar International will serve as primary sponsor on the No. 52 Chevrolet Silverado.
Managing the day-to-day operations of HFR will be NASCAR veteran Tommy Baldwin Jr.
Friesen, a native of Niagara-on-the-Lake Ontario, is a well decorated Modified and Sprint Car competitor. Making his NCWTS debut in 2016 at Eldora Speedway, Friesen ran a six-race schedule with a best finish of 13th at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
“I’m super excited to be part of the Halmar Friesen Racing team,”said Friesen. “We did a bit of racing last year to get our feet wet on asphalt, and we were pleased with our success. Everything we have going on with Tommy is exciting. It’s great to have his experience guiding our team so we can hit the ground running in Daytona.”
Friesen’s crew chief will be Trip Bruce, who most recently worked with Baldwin in the K&N Pro Series East. Bruce has a championship with driver Johnny Benson and a total of ten wins in the NCWTS.
Larsen, owner of Halmar International, said of the new venture with Friesen, “We got our feet wet at Eldora last season mostly because we wanted to have some fun. After that, we ran several more races to get a sense of where we were. When an opportunity came to work with Tommy (Baldwin) and it was a no brainer for us. Because of the relationship with Tommy we have committed to running the whole season. We know we will be prepared, we have good equipment and a great driver.”

New Drivers, Former Driver, Ready To Bolster 358 Modified Division At Big Diamond Speedway

MINERSVILLE, PA.-- A new season is bringing about an influx of drivers to the modified ranks at Big Diamond Speedway.

Three drivers; Frank Porreca, Honesdale; Billy Lasko, Bethlehem, and Kenny Hildebrant, Nazareth, are set to make their debuts in Steel & Metal Service Center 358 modifieds.

Also returning to action in 358 modified competition this year is Kevin Albert, of, Lebanon.

Porreca, 25, a second-generation driver, began racing go-karts when we was eight and he is entering his third year in the modifieds and his second full season having competed the past few years at Penn Can Speedway (Pa.). He is still seeking his first career modified win.

“We’ve been discussing moving to the 358 ranks over the past year and we were in talks with Craig VonDohren and a few others and we made the decision to come and run Big Diamond this year,” he said. “I’ve never even been to the speedway but we have one of Craig’s engines so that should be a good start.”

Lasko, a 16-year old high-school student started racing quarter midgets at Phoenxiville when he was five. He enters his fourth year in modified racing having spent the last three seasons in the asphalt dirt modified division at Mahoning Valley Speedway (Pa.) where he was runner-up in the points last year.

“We’ve been talking about going dirt for two years but I wanted to get more seat time at Mahoning,” Lasko said. “The challenge is going to be the set-up going into the turns and getting used to running with guys like Billy Pauch Jr. and Jeff Strunk. We’re not going to be a top-five car like we were each week at Mahoning.”

Hildebrant, 37, spent last season at Five Mile Point Speedway (N.Y.) and is in his 11th season in modified racing. His father George, who still races today, began his career in the rookie modified division at the Flemington Speedway (N.J.) in 1975 with Billy Pauch Sr.

“Big Diamond is closer to home and it was time to make a change,” he said. “I’ve never raced at the track but racing with the big-name guys and a different scenery along with the good crowd and car counts they get is going to be pretty exciting.”

The unofficial kick-off to the 2017 season begins March 6-10 with the annual Schuylkill Mall car show in Frackville, Pa., just off Route 61 and Interstate 81.

An open practice is set for Sunday, March 26, at 2 p.m. for any car with a cage.

The 46th season opener takes the green flag on Friday night, March 31, with a 30-lap, $4,000 to win feature for the 358 modifieds. Also on the card will be the U.S.S. Achey sportsman, Savage 61 roadrunners and the No Sweat Service Group Street Stocks.

The 2017 rules, pit license, and mall show forms are now available at the speedway's website,www.bigdspeedway.com. Also, season passes are still available.
