Biffle buys dirt track and forms late model series

Greg Biffle has never forgotten his early days of racing across the Northwest, where the path to NASCAR is bumpy at best.


In a nod to his roots, Biffle announced Friday that he has become part owner of an Oregon dirt track and has formed a late model series to help budding racers across the Northwest.

“It’s more about bringing some recognition to these race tracks and kind of giving back to that series and providing a good platform for guys to come out and race on Friday and Saturday night,” Biffle said of his new ventures. “Both of the race tracks I won championships at are gone now. Portland Speedway and Tri Cities Raceway are both extinct.”

Biffle is now part owner of Sunset Speedway in Banks, Oregon, a 0.75-mile clay dirt track located outside Portland. The track will host 35 events this season, which begins April 10.

He also announced the formation of the DAA Spec Motor Series, which will run 22 events on six tracks with a $25,000 season points fund.

Biffle joins Tony Stewart, Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace as track promoters, and had discussions with all of them in the year he’s been working on putting the deals together.


Stewart, who owns famed Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, praised Biffle for committing to help local racers.

“It’s pretty cool to see another guy giving back to his roots and supporting an area he’s very familiar with,” Stewart said. “It’s always a challenge. If it was easy, every promoter in the country would never have any worries. But the good thing is somebody like Greg is committed to making it work. We’ve had conversations for over a year now that he was interested in doing it, so it’s something he’s passionate about and that’s half the battle.”

I took this picture at Syracuse in 1986. That was one of the last years they ran the 410 sprints there. This is a picture of Ron Shuman who ran Ofixco Special. We had a chance to chat with Ron that year. He was a heckava nice guy. The Outlaws just flew on the mile!

Willman, from Birdsboro PA, races regularly at Big Diamond Raceway in Minersville PA on Friday evenings and Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville PA on Saturday. “I hope to win races at both Big Diamond and Grandview this year. I know we will be very competitive. I have the best equipment I’ve ever owned and I can’t wait until April to get the season started.”

During the pre season, Willman will have his #74w Bicknell race car on display at the Reading Race reunion car show held at the Fairgrounds Square Mall. The show runs from Sunday, February 21 thru Saturday, February 27. The familiar blue and yellow modified will also be on display at the Coventry Mall located in Pottstown Pa. The show goes from Friday, March 5 to Sunday, March 7. Willman will have sportswear available that is being created by Weikel Sportswear.

CODY DARRAH!

Here is a pic I took at a Thunder on the Hill event last year of the J & K Salvage #89 of Cody Darrah. Recently Cody and his father were involved in a car accident which found Cody sustaining a horrific leg injury. Word has it that Cody suffered a broken left leg and will be out of action for at least 9 months. What a shame for the local stand out. He was just to begin his maiden tour with the World of Outlaws. Take care Cody and we hope you have a quick recovery!

Scott Hoffmaster was kind enough to share these photo's of his Dad's (Greg) freshly lettered late model that he will campaign at Grandview Speedway this season! The car really turned out nice. Of coure the car turned out nice, another Joe Adams creation! Scott apologized for the garage pictures due to the snow. The car will also be represented this weekend at the Schaeffer's Raceday show. Scott will once again be putting together the Coventry Mall Race show this year. Show dates are March 5-7.  This is one show you don't want to miss! (Click images to enlarge)
